, a group exhibition at Westbeth Gallery, links the interplay among biography, narrative, and experience across a disparate set of artistic practices developed by Rutgers University visual arts MFA graduates.
The artists in this exhibition, as well as those who organized it, are part of a half-century of Art & Design graduate education at Rutgers University prioritizing experimentation across artistic media and disciplines. First year MFA students Em Gallagher, Andrew Kennedy, Kabi Lama, Maura Torres, and Anton Varga have joined instructors Park McArthur and Jason Hirata in organizing a presentation of their graduating peers’ work. Alongside the artistic positions presented here, Playback is an occasion to consider again the exhibition form as it unfolds alongside the interrelated activities animating Westbeth—a complex of homes, artists’ studios, and arts organizations residing in a former Bell Laboratories building.
At 7 PM Sacha Vega will debut a performance in Westbeth’s courtyard. Guests are encouraged to bring headphones for live performance audio.
