    Remote file access

There are two ways to connect and transfer files from remote locations to your computer lab documents. The first method (ftp) is for both Mac and PC while the second (appleshare) only applies to Mac users using on the Rutgers Network.

    FTP

Popular ftp clients for the Mac include Fetch and Cyberduck (free). Popular clients for the PC include Cuteftp and Coffeecup Free FTP (free). Once you have your FTP client, you will need to connect to the server with the server name, username and password. The Server will be art.rutgers.edu and the username/password will be the same as you use to log in to the computer lab.

FTP connectMost FTP clients have a "Connect" or "Open Connection" button. Use this to establish a connection. Most of the time you will only need to enter the servername, username, and password. Be sure you are using FTP as a protocol not FTPS or SSH. when you have all of this in place, connect. Keep in mind it may take up to 30 seconds to create the connection so be patient.

Most FTP clients will allow you to drag and drop files between your workstation and the remote server through the application window. If not, Most FTP clients will have "get" and "put" functions to move files back and forth.

    APPLESHARE

If you want to transfer files on a mac and you happen to be using a computer that is using Rutgers internet access, you should be able to simply mount your portion of the server in your finder.

Under finder choose "Go" then "Connect to Server". You will then be prompted to enter a server name.

In the "Connect to Server" dialog box, enter art.rutgers.edu and click "connect".

Enter your computer lab username and password and click "connect"

After that, you should have the ability to select your documents indicated by your username.
